Experimentation

Ultraviolet and Infrared

A lot of experimentation goes into my work, not all of which goes well, but it's fun to attempt new techniques. Back in the old days, I used infrared film to produce marbled skin and dark skies, but more recently I've been using an infrared digital camera for the same effects. On the other side of the visible wavelength regime, I've shot with an ultraviolet light as the only light source, and that produced some cool results, too.

Other methods can add pizzazz to an image, such as adding new elements in Photoshop, using a green screen to easily include new background imagery, and performing digital "multiple exposure" photos. It's also fun to look through the photos you originally thought were garbage to find the hidden gems. Very often, we photographers don't like a pic at first because it didn't turn out the way we hoped, but in many cases, if you look at the image with fresh eyes, there's still artistry there that you didn't realize you captured.
